'Vintage' swing style
One of the things swing scene is known of today is the vintage dress style in which dancers turn up for swing events. They are often dressed up in the Thirties, Forties or Fifties style. Read more about the swing style bellow.
Shoes
You can't go wrong with a pair of 'black and whites' like on the picture above. Lots of dancers buy vintage shoes after they start taking dance classes or visiting swing dance events. Well, you can always choose different colour combination, but it has to go together with your clothes.
When buying or ordering these shoes we have to be careful that they are also good for dancing and confortable enough. some experienced dancers have several shoes for different suffaces on the dance floor or for different dance they are dancing. Women often wear high heels for balboa and change their shoes when dancing lindy hop for example. For behinners shoes with flexible hard leather on the sole and thick rubber heel should do just fine.
Clothing
To get that true 'swing look' you may search for some old suit that may be hiding in your or your parets wardrobe and combine it with appropriate pants. Just wear suspenders instead of a belt and choose a cool tie. You can dress up in colours or go swingin' in black and white style. Some dress up in american army uniforms from the '40s and '50s, women achieve the similar look by dressing up in navy clothing. Or just go witg the gangster style.
Or just wear jeans or a skirt, 50's style shirt and swing shoes.
If you really want to stand out from the crowd then the Zoot suit is the right choice. These were popular in the 1940s. It is a suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders to get the true rebel look. You may choose a zoot suit in red, green or even yellow colour. Don't forget a hat with a feather in it and a long pocket watch chain.
Female dancers can choose from a wide selection of vintage dresses in '40s and '50s style, tight in a belt. Also spice up your look with a flower in your hair, hair net or something like that.
